Electrotherapy
Electrotherapy modalities are often used in treatment to manage pain and inflammation in acute or chronic injuries. Ultrasound, Interferential Current Therapy and TENS (Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) are used for this purpose. Electrical muscle stimulation is a muscle training technique used to re-train specific muscles needed for normal muscle balance and co-ordination.
Cryotherapy and Heat Therapy
Cryotherapy involves the use of ice packs or a crycuff, ( an ice-filled compression sleeve), to lower tissue temperatures and reduce swelling. These techniques are very effective in the management of pain and inflammation in both acute and repetitive strain injuries.
Heat packs or hot wax treatments are used to reduce stiffness in muscles or joints in preparation for active exercises to regain flexibility and strength.
